GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY
2007 CHERRY BLOSSOM TOURNAMENT

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Location: Both days of competition will be held on Georgetown University’s main campus.  Most likely the whole tournament will be in one or two buildings, depending upon the size of the fields.  Elims will most likely be on campus also.

How to register: Online registration has now closed. For information on registration, please email Kenda Cunningham at GeorgetownRR@gmail.com

Divisions Offered: We will offer three sections of policy debate: Novice, Junior Varsity and Varsity unless entry levels warrant collapsing divisions.  In addition, we will host a Public Forum tournament and a Lincoln Douglass Round Robin.

Important Deadlines: The last day to register for the tournament will be February 12, 2006.  At that point all entries must be finalized including judges.  Any changes to the entry at that point will result in late fees.

Food: We will provide lunch on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.  We will not provide food on elimination round days.  Please note on your registration form if there are food restrictions.

Fees (including drop fees): Each school will be charged a $25 registration fee.  In addition, the following fees apply per team entered: Lincoln Douglas RR - $80.00, Policy Debate - $100.00, Public Forum - $75.00.  These fees include the cost of breakfast and lunch during the preliminary competition. Any team dropping after the deadline of February 12, 2007 will be assessed a cancellation fee per entry dropped of $50.00.

Registration: Registration will occur at the tournament hotel – The Holiday Inn Key Bridge on 1900 N Fort Myer Drive in Arlington, VA. Registration will occur Friday night 8pm-10pm. If you are unable to make it to registration due to travel arrangements, please let Kenda know in advance by emailing her at GeorgetownRR@gmail.com

Hotel: The tournament hotel this year is the Holiday Inn Key Bridge located at 1900 N Fort Myer Drive in Arlington, VA.  This tournament hotel is within walking distance of campus and has a shuttle to campus.  I would not recommend this walk with tubs, but without tubs the walk should be about 15 minutes. The hotel is also only one block away from the metro, which means all of DC is conveniently accessible from the hotel! Given that it is spring break in beautiful Washington DC, the $89 rate per room is truly incredible at such a nice and convenient establishment.  Unfortunately, the  block is quite small at the moment. However, if you discover that the block is full before the deadline of January 19, 2007, please contact me and I will see if I can be of help. I recommend that you make your reservations EARLY.  Again, the deadline for making the reservation under the block is January 19, 2007 for the $89 per night rate.  To make your reservations, call 703-807-2000 and use the group code: GDT.

Judge Requirements:

Policy debate: Seven rounds of qualified judging must be provided for each two teams, and four rounds for one team. All judges are required to be available for one elimination round past your team’s last round.  For varsity policy we expect that your judges be highly qualified and experienced judges, and also high school graduates.  For novice debate you may have debaters with SIGNIFICANT experience, meaning in their 3rd or 4th year of competitive debate, fill your judging requirement.  For junior varsity, high school graduates or seniors with three full years of competitive policy debate experience will be allowed to judge.  Each school should clarify who will be judging at the tournament via the registration website and every judge must also have posted a philosophy on the NDCA website by February 9, 2007. (www.thendca.org)

Public Forum: One judge must be provided for every four Public Forum debate teams (all fractions result in your team providing an additional judge; e.g., whether 4, 5 or 6 Public Forum teams are entered, two judges will need to be provided).

Lincoln Douglas Judging will be outlined in the RR invitation.

Other questions: If you have any other questions about the tournament please email Kenda Cunningham at GeorgetownRR@gmail.com

Event Rules:

Policy Debate: We will use the 2006-2007 National Service resolution.  Time limits will be 8-3-5 with 8 minutes prep per side in Varsity, Novice and Junior Varsity.  For our tournament, a novice is anyone in their first year of policy competition and who has not attended the Woodward novice national competition.  Junior Varsity debaters should not have debated for more than two years competitively in policy debate.  If there are questions about this please direct them to the tournament direct PRIOR to registering. A final schedule will be included in your registration packet on Friday night.

Lincoln Douglas: We will use the NFL 2006-2007 January-February Resolution in a Round Robin. If you are interested in attending the Round Robin, please contact me with your record thus far. We are interested in creating a diverse and educational experience, so please feel free to submit any student for consideration. Judging must be provided as outlined in the Round Robin invitation and a final schedule will be provided in your registration packet on Friday night.

Public Forum: We will use the NFL 2007 February topic. We will use the 4-2-1 format with 3 minutes Cross fires, as per the NFL format. 2 minutes of Prep Time per side. Rounds will be flighted, with a lunch break. We hope to have everyone done on Saturday in time to allow for a team dinner in one of Georgetown’s fine establishments. Finals will conclude on Sunday evening. A final schedule will be included in your registration packet on Friday night.

Entry Limits: At this point we are allowing each school to enter as many teams as they would like in public forum and policy divisions.  If more teams would like to enter than we have space for we will let those with extensive entries know and decrease those entries so that all schools wishing to attend are able to attend. For the LD Round Robin, only teams invited may attend; if you are interested, email Kenda at GeorgetownRR@gmail.com
