Georgetown Debate Cherry Blossom 07
| | | Georgetown DebateThe Georgetown debate team is one of the oldest intercollegiate debate programs on campus and in the nation. Our debaters compete locally, regionally, and nationally in cross-examination style debate; this year the team will travel to Georgia State University, Richmond University, Harvard University, Wake Forest College, the University of Southern California, the University of California at Fullerton, the University of Texas at Dallas, George Mason University, the University of Texas at Austin, Towson University, and the National Debate Tournament. Each debate lasts approximately two hours and covers a broad range of topics: economics, politics, philosophy, and so on. The topic each year is broad and last for the whole year. To give an idea of what a topic might look like here are the resolutions from the 2005-2008 debate seasons. 2005-2006 Resolved: The United States federal government should pressure the People’s Republic of China one on or more of the following issues: Taiwan, human rights, weapons non-proliferation, and/or trade. 2006-2007 Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 505 U.S. 833 (1992) 2007-2008 Resolved: that the United States Federal Government should increase its constructive engagement with the government of one or more of: Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority, and Syria, and it should include offering them a security guarantee and/or a substantial increase in foreign assistance. For more information regarding Georgetown debate feel free to email Michael Greenstein, the Director of Debate, at mbg34@georgetown.edu. The debate office is located in Leavey 424.
