The Georgetown Debate Team has had a busy January!

Georgetown both hosted and competed at an in-person national tournament from January 5-7. This was our first time hosting an in-person tournament since 2020 and it was an overwhelming success. We thoroughly enjoyed having our peers and colleagues in DC! The partnership of Kieran Lawless and Zidao Wang had an impressive 6-2 record in the preliminary debates and made it to the Quarterfinals. In the Quarterfinals, they lost to the NDT winning team from last year on a close 2-1 decision. The partnerships of Ethan Greer/Adam White and Ben Sayers/Haritha Kumar were also successful with 5-3 records and close 2-1 losses in the Double Octofinals. The partnership of Connelly Cowan and Aayush Murarka had wins over UTD, James Madison, and West Georgia.

Georgetown fielded two teams at the US Naval Academy’s Crowe Warken Debates the following weekend. Both Georgetown CM and Georgetown KS had strong 5-3 records at the end of preliminary debates. Unfortunately, CM and KS were the 8th and 9th seeds respectively and therefore closed out an Octofinal Debate. As the higher seed, CM advanced to the quarterfinals where they lost on a 2-1 decision to the tournament’s top seed, UTD.

On January 21st and 22nd, LW and GW debated at their first round robins! LW was invited to the Dartmouth Round Robin, a prestigious & historic round robin reserved for the top seven teams in the nation. This was Georgetown’s first invite since 2016. LW left the round robin with wins over Wake Forest and Dartmouth. GW was invited to the Brick City Round Robin hosted by Rutgers University – Newark. The Brick City Round Robin invited 12 of the best teams in the nation to compete. GW ended the preliminary debates with a 4-1 record and advanced to the Semifinals where they lost to the Wake Forest team that went on to win the Round Robin. LW and GW had excellent showings and we’re excited to see what they do with the rest of the season!

Next up, the team will compete at the Texas Open Tournament held at the University of Texas at Austin from February 4-6!
