January Recap!

Georgetown Debate competed at four tournaments over the past five weekends! Our students and staff traveled to Southern California, Hanover, Newark, Annapolis, and Austin. Some highlights include Round Robin invites, a top speaker award, and deep elim runs!

Kathryn Klassic at the Beach hosted by CSU Long Beach and CSU Fullerton (1/5 – 1/8)

  • Georgetown Lawless and Wang were seminfinalists! Kieran Lawless was the top speaker in the open division out of 126 speakers. Zidao Wang was the 4th speaker. LW also finished the prelims as the top seed with an undefeated record.
  • Georgetown Raman and Sayers were double octafinalists and finished prelims with a 5-3 record.
  • Georgetown Cowan and White were octafinalists and finished prelims with a 5-3 record. Adam White was the 13th speaker and Connelly Cowan was the 18th speaker.

Crowe Warken Debates hosted by the US Naval Academy (1/13 – 1/16)

  • Georgetown Raman and Sayers had wins against George Mason, Trinity, and Emory before having to withdraw due to illness. They still had an impressive showing with a 3-1 finish to Day One!

Brick City Round Robin hosted by Rutgers-Newark (1/20 – 1/21)

  • The Brick City Round Robin is an invitational tournament that only includes top 20 teams in the country. We were one of two schools in the United States to receive two invites this year!
  • Georgetown Zaidi and Zinober were semifinalists after finishing as the top seed in their pod. Zachary Zinober was the 2nd speaker in his pod.
  • Georgetown Cowan and White finished prelims with wins against Minnesota and Emory.

Herbert L James Debates hosted by Dartmouth (1/20 – 1/21)

  • Georgetown Lawless and Wang were one of seven teams in the country to receive an invite to this prestigious round robin tournament. Unfortunately, they were unable to compete due to illness however we are still incredibly proud of them for receiving an invite!
  • Georgetown was one of two schools in the nation to receive three round robin invites for this weekend – one for Dartmouth and two for Brick City.

Texas Open hosted by UT Austin (2/3 – 2/5)

  • Georgetown Lawless and Wang ended the tournament as quarterfinalists! They had an impressive 5-1 record in the preliminary debates. Zidao Wang received the 8th place speaker award and Kieran received the 17th place speaker award.
  • CW, ZZ, and RS all finished the tournament 3-3, narrowly missing elimination round debates!

Up next, our students will compete at the NDT Qualifier Tournament, the American Debate Association National Championship, and the National Debate Tournament! Hoya Saxa!
