Georgetown Debate finished the 2023-2024 year strong with impressive performances at the National Debate Tournament and public debate showings in the DC Area. Georgetown Debate also broke a record for the University by having three teams in elimination rounds of the National Debate Tournament.
Georgetown was one of six schools to have three teams competing at the 2024 National Debate Tournament. Kieran Lawless and Zidao Wang were the fourth-ranked team in the Copeland race and were honored at the opening ceremony for their achievement. Zidao and Kieran were the 6th and 7th speakers respectively. They ended their college debate careers in the octafinals.
Georgetown ZZ finished prelims 6-2 and lost in the octafinals to Emory. Georgetown CW finished prelims 6-2 and lost in the doubles to Kansas. Both ZZ and CW had wins against several first-round teams in preliminary debates! We couldn’t be more proud of the team’s performance at the 2024 NDT and are excited to have CW returning intact next year.
After the NDT, CW competed at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s inaugural debate tournament where they won every ballot possible and were champions of the tournament. This public debate tournament allowed Connelly and Adam to visit the NGA’s campus and learn more about the organization.
Georgetown Debate also had five students compete in a debate against inmates at the DC Jail in partnership with the National Prison Debate League. The Georgetown Debaters enjoyed their experience and will be increasing collaboration with the NPDL in the future!
