Georgetown Debate has had one of the most intense second semester schedules yet!

After a busy January, Georgetown Debate traveled to Austin to compete in the Texas Open hosted by the University of Texas. Four Georgetown teams competed in the open division including Lawless/Wang, Greer/White, Cowan/Sayers, and Kumar/Zaidi. All four teams went 4-2 and LW, GW, and CS made it to elimination rounds. LW and GW were double-octafinalists and GW finished in the octafinals.

In February, Georgetown LW was awarded a First Round At-Large Bid to the National Debate Tournament, cementing their status as one of the top 16 teams in the country. This is the first time that Georgetown has received a First Round At-Large Bid to the National Debate Tournament since 2020.

Georgetown sent two teams to the NDT District VII qualifier hosted by the University of Mary Washington in February. Cowan/Sayers and Greer/White both finished with 5-1 records and finished as the the first and third teams in the District respectively. This is especially impressive as Cowan/Sayers are both first-year students! Georgetown GW also received a Second Round At-Large bid to the National Debate Tournament which means that Georgetown will be one of six squads with three teams at the National Debate Tournament.

Georgetown University hosted the American Debate Association’s National Championship from March 3-5 on Georgetown’s campus. ADA Nationals welcomed 210 debaters across three divisions. Entries represented 20 states! This is the second major tournament Georgetown has hosted this year as part of Georgetown’s commitment to foster debate at the collegiate level. At the ADA Awards ceremony, director Brandon Kelley was presented with the Outstanding New Director Award by the American Debate Association. This award honors directors within their first seven years for accomplishments in service, competitive success, and community-building.

Last up for the season is the National Debate Tournament hosted by Wake Forest University in Chantilly, VA from March 31st through April 3rd!
