Georgetown Debate had a very successful season during the 2021 – 2022 school year. After multiple elimination rounds appearances throughout the year, the team found the most success at the NDT District VII qualifier, the National Debate Tournament, and American Debate Association National Championship, and CEDA.
At the District VII qualifier, Georgetown Debate qualified two teams for the 2022 NDT. The qualifying teams were Georgetown GL (Ethan Greer & Kieran Lawless) and Georgetown WW (Zidao Wang & Adam White). Georgetown GL finished as the #1 team in District VII with a 7-1 record and a top speaker award. Georgetown WW finished as the #5 team in the district with a 5-3 record.
At the NDT, both teams were elimination round participants finishing in the Double Octofinals. Both teams had impressive 5-3 records with wins over Wake Forest, Minnesota, Georgia, and Liberty. The 76th National Debate Tournament marked the 11th consecutive year of Georgetown making an appearance in the elimination rounds of the NDT. It was also the first time since 2015 that more than one Georgetown team debated in the elimination rounds of the NDT.
At the ADA National Championship, the team of Kieran Lawless and Zidao Wang reached the quarterfinals. At CEDA, the hybrid team of Binghamton’s Ronak Ahuja and Georgetown’s Kumail Zaidi reached the quarterfinals.
These successes by Georgetown Debate are especially impressive given that all debaters mentioned are returning to debate again this year. The Georgetown Debate Team is excited for the 2022-2023 season in which teams will be debating legal rights and duties.
