Northwestern + Kentucky Results!
Georgetown Debate had a strong start to the 23-24 season with a top-four finish and two second place finishes!
Georgetown brought three teams to the the Owen L. Coon Memorial Tournament hosted by Northwestern University from 9/16 – 9/18. Georgetown seniors Kieran and Zidao (Georgetown LW) were the top seed out of 122 entries at the end of preliminary debates and finished the tournament as semifinalists. Out of 244 debaters, Kieran and Zidao were the 6th and 7th speakers, respectively. Georgetown ZZ (Kumail and Zach) finished the tournament as octofinalists. Georgetown CW (Connelly and Adam) finished the tournament as double octafinalists. We were ecstatic to have all three Georgetown teams represented in the elimination rounds!
After a busy few days of school and our Alumni Reunion, LW was back on the road for the Kentucky Round Robin hosted by the University of Kentucky. The Kentucky Round Robin is one of the most prestigious tournaments in college debate, reserved for the top seven teams in the country. Just being invited is a huge honor! At the Round Robin, LW had wins against Dartmouth, Emory, Iowa, and Michigan, and finished in 2nd place overall.
Georgetown brought four teams to the Kentucky tournament that followed the round robin. Held in Lexington from 9/30 – 10/2, our teams debated against teams from across the US. First-year student Michael Greenberg debuted with sophomore Ben Sayers and finished with a solid 3-3 record. ZZ also finished with a 3-3 record after some tough losses to top teams. LW finished prelims undefeated as the 2nd seed and ended the tournament as finalists. Zidao was the 4th Speaker and Kieran was the 5th Speaker.
We are so proud of our debaters and the hard work they are putting into debate this season! Stay tuned for results from the upcoming Harvard and Wake Forest tournaments to round out the first semester! HOYA SAXA!
